Overview
China West Airport Group is developing a major new terminal spanning approximately 700,000 square meters, designed to accommodate up to 50 million passengers annually by 2030. To enhance connectivity and passenger convenience, a new Ground Transportation Center (GTC) will be constructed adjacent to the terminal to offer seamless links to subways, highways, and railways.
BHS Design Scope
BNP has been engaged to design the Baggage Handling System (BHS) for the new terminal. This scope includes the development of both concept and detailed designs for all baggage systems, integration of the GTC into the terminal’s baggage network, and planning for future connectivity to a satellite terminal.
System Features
The new BHS is a fully automated, ICS-based system. In compliance with Chinese customs regulations, domestic and international baggage is initially conveyed on separate belt lines to designated top loaders. Once loaded onto carriers, the bags can share common routing throughout the system. To enhance passenger convenience, check-in islands are provided within the GTC, which allows travelers arriving via car parks or public transport to check in their bags with ease. The design also includes provisions for hotel check-in and a city check-in unloading area.
Design Optimization
BNP designed the main sortation system below the apron level to optimize space utilization and improve working conditions for baggage room operations. The system is designed with built-in redundancy that ensures each individual subsystem can continue operating at up to 75% of peak capacity, even in the event of a single point of failure. Additionally, direct-feed conveyor lines connect each check-in island to a make-up carousel, supporting efficient off-peak operations and providing a backup in the event of catastrophic system failure.
Project Support
BNP supported the project through concept design, design development, simulation, tender drawings, and technical specifications for the new Baggage Handling System (BHS), which enable China West Airport Group to procure systems through a competitive tender process. During the construction phase, BNP provided experienced personnel to support the successful delivery and commissioning of the operational BHS.
