STV, Inc. retained BNP to be the Engineer of Record for the Baggage Handling System (BHS) for the New Terminal A at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). The new terminal features 33 gates and offers enhanced flexibility through a “common-use” system designed to maximize gate efficiency.
As the Engineer of Record, BNP played a pivotal role in the design process, collaborating closely with the lead designers and over 30 subconsultants during the peak of design development. BNP managed the BHS design up to 70% completion and led the TSA submittal process through to final approval.
The New Terminal A’s baggage system utilizes a suite of advanced technologies to manage both outbound and inbound baggage efficiently. Key features include:
The system is driven by PLCs with hot backup functionality, providing 3D visualization at operator workstations, and achieving throughput rates of up to 3,300 bags per hour. Its seamless integration and advanced reporting capabilities support smooth, reliable operations.
The outbound system includes a Checked Baggage Inspection System (CBIS) matrix equipped with four CTX-9800 screening devices, paired with a sortation system consisting of twelve make-up devices, with infrastructure in place to allow for future expansion.
Despite the significant challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, including schedule disruptions and resource limitations, the project team successfully pushed through. Major milestones such as Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Integrated Site Acceptance Testing (ISAT) were achieved.
