Overview
Since 2019, BNP has been retained by the Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) for a number of studies, including both small and large projects. BNP continues to provide BHS Consulting services to BAC with full-time onsite staff during construction and remote support for other studies and projects.
Initial Studies and Development
Initially, BNP studied the feasibility of Standard 3 security upgrades and capacity expansions for the International Terminal Building (ITB) and the Domestic Terminal Building (DTB). Following these feasibility studies, BNP was retained, along with multidisciplinary firms, to develop the projects and provide construction administration services.
International Terminal Building (ITB)
For ITB, the scope was limited to security upgrades only, with the capacity works deferred until a later time, but safeguarded in the security upgrade works. After completing some enabling steps to adjust the claim feed conveyors, a new mezzanine for the four Rapiscan RTT110 ECAC Standard 3 machines and a new support complex for the security operators will be constructed. With the new screening machine in place, a delicate staging/phasing process begins to reroute the check-in and transfer baggage from the existing screening equipment to the new one.
Domestic Terminal Building (DTB)
For DTB, the existing three separate systems are planned to be combined into a single, common-use system with a central Checked Baggage System (CBS), featuring four Rapiscan RTT110 ECAC Standard 3 machines, and a new support complex located at the central pier of the terminal. This provides significant benefits in terms of flexible capacity, reduced quantity of screening machines, and operational benefits. The DTB project results in an overhaul and replacement of the majority of the DTB baggage handling system.
Implementation Challenges
Both projects must be executed in live environments, requiring intricate staging and phasing to be coordinated with the building construction facilities and related passenger checkpoint construction activities. This detailed staging and phasing were developed during the design and coordinated by stage or phase in BIM to test feasibility.
Tender Support and Construction
BNP subsequently assisted BAC by preparing the technical input/specifications for the BHS tenders and supported BAC during the tendering process and evaluation.
Both projects are currently under construction, with the BHS being provided by Alstef. BNP is providing support to BAC through construction submittal reviews, progress monitoring, inspections, and witness testing, among other services.
Ongoing Support
In parallel, BNP is providing BAC support for various studies, such as check-in CUSS projects under a framework agreement.
